How to Grow When You Don’t Have the Dough

So often we hear potential clients, friends and family deny themselves therapy based on finances. They say they can’t afford it. However, as therapists we would argue that they can’t afford not to go to therapy. Afterall, neglecting one’s values and problems can create great anxiety, stress and depression. Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes money really is the issue. However, often times, it is an excuse. A way to avoid addressing the elephant in the room and run away from the challenges at hand.

In this way, consulting solo and group practice owners can be similar to our patients. Practice owners don’t want to spend any money to make money. And the cycle persists.

Believe me, I get it. When I first started as a solo practice owner, I was scared. There were so many unknowns. Can I keep my business afloat? Do we have the space? Where do I find clients? So many unknowns. How was I going to map out this uncharted territory? As with everything in life, I prayed. God showed me ways to succeed. He introduced me to people that had mapped out the path I wanted to go down. He also showed me how to accept help from others. In those early days of my practice, I decided to join a mastermind group. Joining that group was life-changing. It took me from being a solo practice owner to quadrupling my income in a 2 year span. Not only did my professional life flourish, so did my personal life. To this day, some of my nearest and dearest friend are from that original mastermind group. We STILL call each other for advice and meet regularly.

Like with therapy, mastermind groups demand growth. You are held accountable by others. That is why today I want to talk to you about getting held accountable, focusing on what you love and community outreach. Because all three of these things are going to add value without having to spend a ton of money.

Get Held Accountable

As I stated above, mastermind groups are the best way (outside of consulting) to be held accountable for your goals. When you're accountable to yourself or others, the commitment to your goals becomes more significant. The awareness that someone is monitoring your progress or that you have set expectations for yourself can boost motivation and drive. Accountability helps you define your goals more precisely. When you know that your actions will be scrutinized, you are more likely to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives. This clarity facilitates better planning and execution. Accountability fosters discipline. Meeting your commitments consistently, whether they are personal or professional, requires the development of good habits and routines. Over time, this discipline becomes ingrained in your behavior, contributing to long-term success.

Focusing on What You Love

Using community to focus on what you love by consulting with Whitney Owens.

Start focusing on what you love by delegating. Now I know what you are thinking, how can I delegate without money to hire?! But hear me out. If you are a solo practice owner and decide to hire just one other clinician or intern you could double your profits while splitting your workload. Double the joy, half the sorrow ;) Aren’t ready to take that risk? Consider getting help from a spouse. The important thing is to divide and conquer so that you have more energy to focus on what you love.

Community Outreach

Community outreach for a business can offer a range of advantages that extend beyond traditional marketing and sales efforts. Engaging with the community in a meaningful way can build positive relationships, enhance brand reputation, and contribute to long-term success. I have covered marketing strategies for christians in a previous blog. I have also discussed in great length networking with schools.
