The Power of the Therapeutic Relationship

This event is an interdepartmental only event for the clinicians at Water’s Edge Counseling, LLC.

Description

Though we are trained in clinical techniques in graduate school, sometimes we place too great an emphasis on these skills and miss out on another important therapeutic approach. Based on research, it is proven that the therapeutic relationship is the strongest indicator of client success. Yet, we often are not trained in how to appropriately and effectively utilize this amazing skill. In this workshop, you will learn how to do just that, use the therapeutic relationship to help meet treatment goals.

Abstract

The purpose of this workshop is to educate counselors on using a therapeutic relationship to meet treatment goals. Clinicians will learn how to be aware of the impact of the therapeutic relationship inside and outside the treatment room. We will discuss multiple techniques to leverage the therapeutic relationship to bring greater client insight and meet treatment goals. The workshop will cover identifying your own biases and relationship concerns that you bring into your relationship with your client. The workshop will examine the benefits and risks in sharing your personal experiences of your client with your client.

Learning Objectives

Objective 1: Participants will identify their own biases and personal histories that they bring into the therapeutic relationship.

Objective 2: Participants will examine how to use the “here and now” to address client concerns and meet treatment objectives.

Objective 3: Participants will gain skills to teach clients how to improve their personal relationships based on the exploration of the relationship one has with their therapist.
