Should I Put My Practice in a Church?

As a faith-based private practice consultant, I often get asked the questions, “Should I put my practice in a church?” Well, like with most things in life. The answer is, “maybe.”

Today we are going to address the pro’s and con’s of putting your practice in a church.

Let’s start with the benefits.

Familiarity and Comfort: For many individuals seeking therapy, particularly those within religious communities, the familiarity and comfort of a church environment can be reassuring. It may alleviate some of the apprehensions associated with seeking professional help.

Holistic Approach: Integrating therapy with the resources of a church can facilitate a holistic approach to healing. Clients may find support not only through therapeutic sessions but also through spiritual guidance and community involvement.

Shared Values and Beliefs: Therapists practicing within a church setting often share the values and beliefs of their clients, fostering a deeper understanding and connection. This alignment can enhance the therapeutic alliance and promote trust.

Access to a Built-in Community: Churches often have a built-in community that can offer additional support to clients. This sense of belonging and connection can be invaluable in the healing process.

Now for the con’s.

Boundaries: Maintaining professional boundaries can be challenging when practicing within a church setting. It's essential to clearly define the roles of therapist and member of the clergy, ensuring that ethical standards are upheld.

Confidentiality: Protecting client confidentiality is paramount in therapy. Within a church environment, there may be additional challenges in ensuring privacy, particularly if the therapist is also a member of the congregation.

Diversity of Beliefs: While integrating therapy with a church can be beneficial for some clients, it may not be suitable for everyone. Therapists must be mindful of the diversity of beliefs within their community and ensure that their practice remains inclusive and respectful of all perspectives.

Potential for Dual Relationships: Therapists practicing within their church may face the risk of dual relationships, where they have multiple roles (e.g., therapist, friend, fellow congregant) with the same individual. This can blur boundaries and impact the therapeutic process.

Professional Development and Supervision: Practicing within a church setting may limit access to professional development opportunities and supervision. It's important for therapists to seek support and supervision outside of their immediate religious community to ensure ongoing growth and ethical practice.

In conclusion:

Therefore, I encourage anyone considering a church as the location for their practice to focus hard on their relationship with that church. Are you deeply involved in the church and is it a tight-knit community? If so, the possibility for dual relationships increases and contaminates the work you are trying to do. A larger church would be a better place for an office since the community wouldn’t have such blurred boundaries. At the end of the day, this decision should not be made without careful consideration.

Are you currently starting a practice and considering locations? Do you have a community that you can count on in your journey as a practice owner? We need others for guidance and support. We need friends who understand what we are going through. That’s part of the reason why I love the Wise Practice Community (a group of faith-based counseling practice owners) so much. The Community is currently closed however we plan to open the doors for the next cohort on April 29, 2024 for 3 days only.
