It’s Lonely at The Top

At times running a business can leave us feeling isolated. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are responsible for making important decisions on a daily basis. Often, we must lead and guide our organizations with little input from others.  It’s true what they say: It’s lonely at the top.

The author of Ecclesiastes knew this all too well. He had acquired great wealth (Eccl. 2:8). He had built impressive houses and vineyards (Eccl. 2:4). He claims that he became a greater leader in Jerusalem than anyone before him (Eccl. 2:9). And yet all of this left him feeling empty. His wealth and achievement were meaningless without anyone to share them with.

We need to connect with others to share our losses and our successes. I also meet regularly with a small mastermind group. Three other faith-based practice owners and I gather for mutual support and encouragement. Sometimes I’m giving help to one of them; at other times, I’m the one in need of support. That’s what community looks like.

We may resist our need for community, and we try to go it alone. It makes us feel important to be the one in charge. We like to think that we can do it all ourselves, and that we don’t need anyone. During this Lenten season, let us free ourselves of the desire to go it alone and, instead, build meaningful relationships of mutual support.

Do you have a community that you can count on in your journey as a practice owner? We need others for guidance and support. We need friends who understand what we are going through. That’s part of the reason why I love the Wise Practice Community (a group of faith-based counseling practice owners) so much. The Community is currently closed however we plan to open the doors for the next cohort on April 29, 2024 for 3 days only.
